What Salvation Road Ministries is all about.
Until November 2003 when health problems forced me out of my semi, I was living my
childhood dream. Since the Days of movies like "Convoy" and TV shows like "Movin' On" and
"BJ and the Bear" I and my brother have always wanted to drive semi trucks. Although my
career behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler was cut short, I still love to see a semi driving
down the highway.
Truck driving is a lonely hard life. Many temptations face Truckers, and many fall victim to
temptations such as, drug use to stay awake long hours. Stretching the truth (alright lying)
on log books and to dispatchers and customers about why they are late or that they were
legal in their hours of service. (I had been guilty of these). But worst of all temptations, lot
lizards, a.k.a. Prostitution. Like I said I was guilty of lying quite a bit but I did not fall victim to
the other temptations, Thank God.
Unfortunately temptations far outweigh any Christian support for truck drivers. While many
truck stops do provide Christian Literature, the one thing missing at most places and is few
and far between in others is a place for truckers to come for help to avoid these temptations.
Someone to talk to and keep their Christian souls strong. Not enough truck stops either
have space or patience for truck stop Chaplains. Some place do but many don't. I am trying
to change that in my area. There are about 6 truck stops. The one that did have a chaplain
unfortunately closed down and reopened as an adult travel plaza. Opening up even more
temptations. While many churches in the area are trying to close the plaza the truck drivers
are not being helped to avoid these sinful ways.
My main goal is to provide a source of good Christian counseling and fellowship to the
truckers who come through here. My main stumbling block besides finances is trying to gain
access to the truck stops for literature placement but more importantly space to put chapels
where truckers can come for help.
The one thing I can do right away is to reach truckers in the one avenue I have available
right now, the Internet. I am going to provide what I can on this site to other trucking sites on
the web and continue to work on accessing the truck stops as soon as possible
